Filler Options, Explained

If you want to get rid of a wrinkle, you just get it filled … Right? As much as one might want to simplify how to get rid of hollow eyelids, deep tear troughs and nasolabial folds, proper, professional rejuvenation is as much a science as it is an art. The fillers we choose reflect careful consideration of your face’s distinct shape and structure, which I aim to maintain by restoring volume and balance for natural, gorgeous results. This requires a refined approach that goes beyond simply filling in lines.

Firstly, dermal fillers aren’t interchangeable. Each possesses a specific weight and formula best suited to particular areas and uses. Secondly, your unique face shape, age and desires also play important roles in determining the correct fillers for you.

My holistic Surface, Shape and Structure™ approach takes all of these factors into account by creating customizing treatment plans based upon pre-treatment consultation, but I’ve also outlined the broad strokes below, detailing which filler is (generally) best where.

For Lip Enhancement:

When filling lips, I aim to provide subtle plumping as well as to restore shape and projection. This makes thin- and medium-weight dermal fillers the best for enhancing lips without looking overdone. To create understated definition, I inject the chosen filler at the vermilion border, where the pink roll of the lip meets the skin. I also often subtly volumize the area around the lips to create a cohesive, balanced frame that helps your fuller lips look all the more natural.

My top picks: Juvederm Ultra XC, Volbella or Restylane Kysse (depending upon your lip shape and desired enhancement)

For Treating Tired Eyes:

To remedy hollow eyelids, undereye bags, deep tear troughs and dark shadows, I opt for thin- or medium-weight dermal fillers that won’t swell beneath thin eyelid skin, creating a puffy effect. Depending upon the your goals and anatomy, I also consider nanofat transfers to address dark circles. These discreet injections graft small deposits of your own fat from areas with available stores to strategic face and eye zones for a more radiant, youthful appearance.

My top picks: Restylane or Belotero (injected sufficiently deep to avoid irregularities on the surface)

For Treating Deeper Folds:

When injected properly, dermal fillers are adept at treating wrinkles, particularly those around the mouth, which are referred to as laugh lines, nasolabial folds and marionette lines. To rejuvenate these areas while preserving natural movement and expression, I customarily use medium-weight Juvederm or Restylane products, which are more flexible than Restylane Lyft or Voluma.

My top picks: Juvederm Vollure or Restylane Defyne

For Smoothing Fine Lines:

Because they reside closer to the skin’s surface, crow’s feet and fine lip lines are best addressed with lightweight fillers because they are injected more superficially.

My top picks: Volbella, Restylane Silk or Belotero

For Restoring Facial Shape and Structure:

Placing dermal fillers at the cheeks and jawline combats facial sagging and redefines the ideal angles and shapes of these areas. Chin fillers address volume loss and enhance proportionality and balance, while temple fillers help restore facial harmony by replacing lost volume.

My top picks: Restylane Lyft, Voluma or Radiesse
