Fillers: The Basics

When dermal fillers first registered on the public radar, they were synonymous with bee-stung lips and protruding cheekbones. Today, fillers are employed with more restraint and specificity — whether the goal is to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, redefine the jawline and chin, or enhance facial shape and symmetry.

At Brooklyn Face & Eye, this reality is integrated into a holistic facial refinement philosophy that guides filler selection and use, based upon your unique characteristics and goals. I examine these factors during a pre-treatment consultation and target them with a custom treatment plan.

Commonly, however, I use fillers to combat undereye hollows and deep tear troughs as well as subtly lift cheeks to counteract the long-term effects of gravity on the face. I also often use fillers to plump the lips and philtrum, offset deep folds around the mouth (smile lines, nasolabial folds or marionette lines) and minimize fine lines throughout the face

There is an ideal filler for each of these treatments, which is why I rely upon an array of options, including: Juvederm (Voluma, Volbella, Vollure), Restylane (Refyne and Defyne), Radiesse and Belotero. Specifically, I use hyaluronic acid-based fillers — such as Juvederm, Restylane and Belotero — for soft tissues. Their makeup is similar to the hyaluronic acid naturally found in our bodies and skin, and they tend to last around 12 months.

I also often employ Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections, nanofat transfers and microinfusion treatments in combination with or in-place of fillers. PRP is obtained from your own blood and infused into an injectable serum packed with growth factors and proteins. This in-office treatment stimulates collagen production, producing noticeable volumizing effects several weeks after treatment.

Similarly, nanofat injections use your own growth factors, which are present in your fat cells. Performed in-office, this treatment involves removing a small amount of fat cells from areas with available stores, transforming them into a serum and injecting them to boost volume and/or treat under-eye hollows.

Microinfusions, meanwhile, are custom cocktails of antioxidants and hyaluronic acid delivered just below the skin’s surface via a small stamp-like tube topped with tiny needles. In addition to plumping the complexion, this zero-downtime treatment is a perfect anytime skin pick-me-up and ideal before special events.
